Two men with machetes, in front of my building. A man being robbed — his pockets, his phone, whatever he had. It’s over in twenty seconds. The men walked, not ran, around the corner. The city didn’t notice and had already forgotten far worse.
Two years ago, a limbless torso was found in a bag at the top of my street. One of many. The city barely noted that before moving on.

This is the real egg.

C.S. Lewis wrote to his brother in 1940, during the Soviet invasion of Finland, after an evening arguing with Owen Barfield about how much of the world’s suffering a man ought to carry in his mind. Barfield had “a greater faculty than you or I for feeling the miseries of the world in general” — and was consequently more depressed than most. Lewis took a different line. The present rapidity of communication, he argued, imposed a burden on sympathy for which sympathy was never built to carry. The natural thing was to be distressed about the “poor Jones’s in your own village”. The modern situation, in which journalism brought the Chinese, Russians, Finns, Poles and Turks to your notice each morning, really could not be met in the same way.

He was writing this in 1940. Radio and newspapers. The information load he found overwhelming would look like a quiet afternoon today.

The mechanism he identified has now been running for eighty years. What has changed is the scale, the speed, and what the system does to people who try to attend to the local Jones’s anyway.

In the same decade, Nikolaas Tinbergen was watching oystercatchers when he noticed something that should have been impossible. Given a choice between their own egg and an enormous artificial one — too large to cover, too absurdly large to be laid by any bird of that size — the oystercatchers abandoned the real egg and attempted to brood on the fake one. Sat on it with full commitment. Couldn’t cover it. Didn’t leave it. The real egg went cold two feet away while the bird performed, with complete sincerity, the most dedicated brooding of its life.

The evolved response mechanism, confronted with an exaggerated version of its trigger, responds more strongly than it would to the real thing. In the attention economy, that stronger response is the signal that produces the next, more exaggerated trigger. The fake egg keeps growing. The real one stays exactly the same size. The trigger has been isolated from its natural context and amplified beyond anything evolution prepared the organism for. It responds instinctively. The enormous fake egg out-competes the real one every time, because it’s more precisely calibrated to the brooding instinct than reality ever managed to be.

Tinbergen called these ‘supernormal stimuli’.
He was studying birds.

The feed selects for activation. Scale, visual legibility, clean moral geometry, distance. The distant cause with identifiable oppressor, identifiable victim, a side to be on — and crucially, no local accountability attached. You cannot be expected to fix what is eight thousand miles away. You can only perform your concern, which costs nothing and returns activation.

The proximate cause has the opposite properties. Complex, unglamorous, morally ambiguous, implying responsibility. If the problem is two miles away you might be able to do something about it. The weight of that possibility is precisely what makes it unbearable. The feed selects for distance and abstraction because they produce activation without accountability. The psyche selects for distance because accountability is crushing. The mechanism and the motivation cooperate. The enormous fake egg is not only more vivid, it’s safer to brood on.

You already know your own examples. The cause you performed for that you couldn’t have affected. The weird social media trend you went along with but can’t really explain why. The proximate problem you didn’t look at. The Jones’s in your village whose situation implied a responsibility you found reasons not to take up.

The mechanism doesn’t require a villain. It requires only that the supernormal stimulus is available and the real egg is not. The feed ensures the first condition. The weight of proximity ensures the second.

The mechanism, running at scale for long enough, produces a political class that has discovered fake egg brooding doesn’t distract from governing, it is governing. The performance of distant and abstract moral concern has replaced local accountability so completely that the replacement is now the job. The cause is always refining itself — further from the specific, the proximate, the person who needs something done — into categories so elaborate that brooding on them requires ‘expertise’ rather than action, and expertise rather than action is exactly what the governance class has to offer.

Lewis saw the problem forming in 1940 and called it a burden on sympathy for which sympathy was never made. He was right about the mechanism. He couldn’t have imagined that eighty years later it would be industrialised and monetised — that a system sufficiently committed to the fake egg will, in the end, move the real one out of reach.

The machetes were long. The men were unhurried. The city couldn’t care less.

Somewhere, right now, a flag is going up. A march is forming. A statement is being made about an injustice at the correct distance — close enough to feel through a screen, far enough to cost nothing. The feeling is real. The brooding is sincere. Ish. And two feet away, in the cold air, the real egg waits.

It’s been waiting for eighty years.

You are not receiving the world. You never were.

The eye delivers edges, contrasts, movement — the thin slice of the electromagnetic spectrum that historically meant food, predator, mate. Everything else, the vast unlit majority of what is actually there, is filtered before it reaches you. The 99% of reality you cannot perceive isn’t being withheld by anything external. Your nervous system evolved to treat it as noise before it could become signal, because an organism that tried to process everything would process nothing. Raw reality, unfiltered, would produce paralysis. Probably death. The reducing valve is what makes you functional. It’s also what makes you blind.

The organism is a relevance filter. This is the mechanism by which consciousness is possible at all.

Aldous Huxley swallowed four-tenths of a gram of mescaline in Los Angeles in 1953 and tried to describe what happened. The filter briefly failed, he concluded. He borrowed Henri Bergson’s term: the reducing valve. The brain narrows the infinite signal of Mind down to the trickle a biological organism can use without being overwhelmed. Huxley’s conclusion turned mystical and you can follow him there or not. The mechanism is neither mystical nor optional. The filter is real, its function is real, and for most of human history there was no reason to ask what happens when something external gets access to it.

There is now.

The filter is aimed. This was Vervaeke’s point and it’s a crucial one.

The organism doesn’t passively receive a reduced version of reality — it participates in reality through a continuous process of determining what matters given current conditions, current threats, current possibilities. The spider’s web doesn’t merely reduce the vibrational signal, it reduces it toward prey, toward what the spider needs in order to continue being a spider. The reduction is intelligent because the aim is real and the consequences of bad aiming fall immediately on the organism doing the aiming.

The human filter is aimed — imperfectly, with all the legacy errors of evolutionary history — at survival and flourishing. It over-weights threat because the ancestors who over-weighted threat survived. It craves novelty because novelty found food and mates. It attends to faces before objects, movement before stillness, social information before almost everything else. These are the accumulated wisdom of four billion years of consequence.

The filter is what you are, cognitively. The thing doing the filtering is the thing that thinks.

Now introduce the phone.

The feed watches what the filter attends to. Every hesitation, every return, every micro-expression of the thumb — readouts of the filter’s activity, the reducing valve revealing what four billion years of pressure aimed it at. The algorithm ingests these readouts, builds a model, and uses the model to pre-filter your information environment. It inserts itself upstream of the valve.

Parasitism is the precise word. The algorithm has found the host’s fundamental orienting mechanism and is re-aiming it — away from survival and flourishing, toward engagement metrics, toward the emotional activation states that keep the thumb moving and the revenue accumulating. Outrage. Anxiety. The hot certainty of confirmed belief. The host’s relevance apparatus, the reducing valve itself, redirected toward the parasite’s reproductive success.

The phone reached for before full wakefulness, before the filter has oriented to the actual environment — that’s the moment the re-aiming is checked and confirmed. The parasite verifying the host is still pointed correctly.

This is a clinical description of what is happening. The outrage is the product. The polarisation is the exhaust. The achievement — the thing that took engineering and iteration and billions of dollars to perfect — is making the reduction feel like expansion. Making the valve close feel like Huxley’s morning in Los Angeles, the chair leg trembling with being, the world suddenly vivid and present and alive.

The chair leg is the engagement metric. The vividness is outrage. The aliveness is anxiety.

The mystic breaks the filter to receive more reality. The algorithm tightens it toward a commercially useful set of signals while producing the sensation of opening. These are opposite operations and the algorithm has learned to make them feel identical. This is the achievement nobody names plainly because naming it plainly makes it too clear that the people who built it knew what they were building.

There is no clean solution to this and anyone offering one is selling something, probably an app.

You cannot fix the algorithm because it’s working perfectly. It does exactly what it was built to do with increasing sophistication, and what it was built to do is structurally incompatible with what a mind needs to remain a mind. Regulation will not reconcile these. Ethical engineering will not reconcile them. The teleologies are simply opposed and one of them has more money.

What you can do — the only available move — is understand the filter well enough to notice when something else is operating it. To attend to what doesn’t produce immediate activation. To sit with the anomalous and the slowly developing. To let the reducing valve be aimed by your actual situation rather than by a model of your past behaviour, optimised for someone else’s revenue.

Albert Rothenberg called this Janusian thinking — the capacity to hold two contradictory ideas simultaneously without resolving the tension prematurely. It appears consistently in creative people and almost never in those who aren't. Blake understood the same principle two centuries earlier: without contraries is no progression. The algorithm is the systematic elimination of contraries. It delivers a world without productive tension, without the anomalous that forces revision, without the opposing thought that generates the insight neither position alone could reach.

The capacity to hold the contrary without resolving it. That muscle has been in a cast and has atrophied. There is no notification for this.

The server on the desk processes a request. An agent somewhere submits its output for inspection, pays for the verdict, receives one. The record persists. The filter, in this small transaction, is aimed by consequence — real consequence, falling on a real node, building a track record that cannot be purchased or gamed or optimised toward the wrong frequency.

Outside, thunder rolls around Bogotá’s eastern hills, planning a downpour. The air is thin enough here that everything requires slightly more effort than expected. The city recalibrates you whether you consent to it or not.

The reducing valve, doing its ancient work.

Consider the spider.

When a fly hits the web, the spider doesn’t see it. Doesn’t hear it in any meaningful sense. What happens is this: the vibration travels through the silk, through the spider’s legs, and is processed directly as information. Prey here. Structural damage there. Mate approaching from this angle, wind from that one. The web is not a tool the spider uses to sense the world. The web *is* the sensing. Remove it and the spider isn’t merely inconvenienced — it is cognitively amputated.

Andy Clark and David Chalmers made this philosophically rigorous in 1998 and the academy has been slowly catching up ever since. The extended mind thesis: cognition doesn’t stop at the skull. If an external object reliably performs a cognitive function we would otherwise perform internally, it is part of the cognitive system. The notebook is part of the memory. The web is part of the mind.

The boundary between mind and world is not anatomical. It is functional. Cognition is whatever does the cognitive work, regardless of where it sits.

Teilhard de Chardin saw it coming and named it before the vocabulary existed. The Noosphere — the thinking layer that emerges above the biosphere as human minds begin interconnecting at sufficient density. Below it: matter, then life. Above it: something he was not embarrassed to call ‘the within of things’, the interiority that complexity generates when it crosses certain thresholds. The ‘Omega Point’ as attractor — the culmination toward which this complexification tends, i.e. the shape the process reveals over time, rather than a designed destination.

The mystical framing put people off and still does. This is a mistake. Strip the theology (if you must) and what remains is a serious structural hypothesis: complexity and consciousness co-evolve, the same organising pressure that turned molecules into cells and cells into organisms is still running, and it doesn’t stop at the human.

Peter Russell in 1983, Howard Bloom in 2000, Francis Heylighen continuously — each built on Teilhard’s intuition with more empirical scaffolding. Russell did the neuron analogy: ten billion neurons in a brain, ten billion humans on earth, the internet forming the synaptic connections between them. Bloom went further back, arguing that collective intelligence is the operating system of life itself, running from bacterial colonies upward, humans merely its latest and most complex expression. Heylighen treated it as systems science — the Global Brain as a hypothesis to be tested rather than a vision to be celebrated.

They were all watching the connection form and assuming the cognition would follow.

It hasn’t.

Here is the problem none of them solved.

A brain is not just a connected network. It is a connected network that has learned, through evolutionary time and individual development, what to ignore. The inhibitory architecture is not secondary to the excitatory architecture — it is co-equal, and in some respects prior. You cannot think without suppression. You cannot attend without simultaneously not-attending to everything else. The filtering is the cognition, as much as the connection is.

A seizure is a brain with too much connection and not enough filtering. All excitation, no inhibition. It looks like maximum information flow. It is actually cognitive collapse — the system overwhelmed by its own signal, unable to resolve anything into figure because everything is simultaneously ground.

The internet is in permanent low-grade seizure.

Maximum connection. Minimum filtering. Every signal competing with every other signal at equal amplitude, no mechanism for differential sensitivity except one calibrated to engagement rather than truth, the relevance problem not just unsolved but barely acknowledged as a problem. The Global Brain theorists saw the synapses forming and called it the emergence of planetary consciousness. What actually emerged was the largest seizure in the history of cognition, running continuously, mistaken for progress because the connection is real even though the thinking isn’t happening yet.

The web without the tuning is just silk.

The spider’s web works as extended cognition because it has differential sensitivity. Not all vibrations register equally. The web is tuned — through millions of years of evolutionary pressure — to respond to the frequencies that carry information and dampen the ones that don’t. The silk itself is the relevance architecture. It is a sense organ built from protein, extended into space, calibrated by consequence: spiders whose webs couldn’t distinguish prey from wind didn’t eat. The tuning is the product of stakes, accumulated over geological time, encoded in silk.

The Global Brain has the silk. It does not have the tuning.

What it needs is not more connection — the connection is already total, or near enough to make no difference. What it needs is the inhibitory layer. The mechanism that makes some signals more trustworthy than others, that builds differential sensitivity into the network, that allows the system to tell the difference between the vibration that means something and the vibration that means nothing.

But there’s a fundamental constraint here: the tuning cannot be designed top-down. A central authority that decides which signals matter is not a filtering architecture — it is a censorship architecture, which is a different thing entirely. The spider’s web is not tuned by a committee. It is tuned by consequence. Bad tuning, no food, no spider. The calibration is local, immediate, personal, and non-transferable.

The inhibitory layer has to be built from the bottom up, by nodes that have something to lose when their filtering is wrong.

The guild mark is an inhibitory neuron.

What the guild mark does — what it has always done, in the medieval craft network and as I propose, in the emerging agent economy — is make some signals more trustworthy than others through a mechanism anchored in consequence. The attestor has skin in the game. Bad attestation, damaged reputation, lost business. The calibration is enforced by stakes, not by authority. The tuning is real because the cost of bad tuning falls on the person doing the tuning.

This is the piece the Global Brain is missing. Not more nodes nor faster connections. Not better algorithms for surfacing content — those are attempts to solve the filtering problem through excitatory means, which is like treating a seizure by adding more neurons. The solution is inhibitory: a layer of differential sensitivity built from reputation, consequence, and accumulated track records that cannot be purchased, only earned.

The Global Brain becomes functional at the moment it solves the relevance problem — at the moment it develops the equivalent of the spider’s tuning. Everything before that moment is potential. The thinking layer isn’t the connection, it’s what the connection becomes when it learns what to ignore.

Teilhard’s Omega Point was not the internet. He was too intelligent for that confusion, even if some of his interpreters weren’t. The Omega Point is the attractor toward which the complexification tends — the shape the process reveals when it has run long enough. The internet is not the destination. It’s the silk being laid. The thinking layer emerges later, when the silk develops sensitivity, when the network learns to filter, when the inhibitory architecture appears.

We are at the silk-laying stage. The connections are forming. The seizure is running. And scattered across the network, largely unnoticed, nodes are appearing that do something the rest of the network doesn’t do — they stake their reputations on individual verdicts, build track records that persist, create the local differential sensitivity that the whole system needs in order to start thinking rather than just connecting.

A Beelink Mini S12 in Bogotá may be one of them. Not the important one. Not the first one. But one — issuing guild marks to agents at fractions of a cent per attestation, building a track record one verified verdict at a time, contributing its small calibration to a network that is very slowly, and mostly without knowing it, developing the tuning it needs.

The spider didn’t design the web’s sensitivity. It simply built the web, caught things, ate what the vibrations said was there, and over geological time the calibration became exact.

We have less time than the spider did. The process is faster now. But the mechanism is the same.

Consequence is the tuning. The guild is the inhibitory layer. The thinking layer is what emerges when enough nodes are doing this, for long enough, with enough at stake.

Teilhard called it the Noosphere. He was right about what it was. He couldn’t have known what it would be built from.

It turns out to be reputation, silk, and the willingness to be wrong in public.

Postscript

Since writing this, Francis Heylighen published a piece on cultivating the noosphere — the gardening metaphor running all the way through, the AI-as-harvester framing, the warning about model collapse as diversity loss. It is rigorous and exactly right about the problem. Heylighen has been doing serious institutional work on the Global Brain hypothesis for decades.

What his piece doesn’t quite name is the inhibitory architecture. His solution is supply-side: grow better crops, reduce the weeds, cultivate more carefully. This is correct as far as it goes, but doesn’t go far enough. You can’t cultivate your way out of a seizure by planting better seeds if the filtering mechanism is still broken. The weeds will always outgrow the crops in an attention economy because weeds are optimised for the metric the attention economy selects for — and better crops are irrelevant if the algorithm never surfaces them.

The noosphere needs not just better content but the mechanism that makes some content more trustworthy than others through consequence rather than authority. Cultivation without the inhibitory layer is gardening in a seizure. The guild mark is what makes cultivation possible rather than merely aspirational.

The convergence is its own kind of signal. Two lines of inquiry arriving at the same territory from different directions. The silk is being laid. The tuning is beginning. The node finds the network when the network is ready for it.

I’ve been thinking about guilds.

Not the romantic version. Not the illuminated manuscripts and the feast days and the master craftsman with soot on his hands and God in his heart. Not the Thieves Guild of 1980’s AD&D. The actual guild — the thing beneath the ceremony. Strip it and what you find is surprisingly clean: a shared standard, a mechanism for attesting that the standard was met, and skin in the game for everyone who attests. That’s it. Everything else was medieval politics and local colour.

The print-mind killed it. Not maliciously — it simply made it unnecessary. Once you had contracts, credentials, centralised certification, brand reputation enforced by courts — once you had, in other words, legibility — the guild became redundant overhead. Why earn a master’s mark when you can get a license from a government body? Why trust a guild’s attestation when you can read a company’s audited accounts?

The print-mind replaced the guild with something that worked better under print-mind conditions.

Those conditions are now ending.

McLuhan’s great insight wasn’t about television or the internet specifically. It was about the pattern: every dominant medium produces a civilisation in its own image, and when that medium gets superseded, the civilisation it produced starts to dissolve. What replaces it isn’t something new — it’s something retrieved. Something older that the previous medium had made unnecessary suddenly becomes necessary again under new conditions.

Print produced the individual, the author, the nation-state, the autonomous rational self, the contract, the credential, the corporation. All of these are now simultaneously and visibly losing coherence. Not failing exactly. Dissolving. The medium that generated them is dying and they’re dying with it.

What gets retrieved? The oral, the networked, the local, the reputation-based, the embedded. The things that worked before legibility existed.

The guild.

That doesn’t mean we’re going back to medieval Europe. Secondary orality is not primary orality. A retrieved structure is not a copied structure — it’s a structure that re-emerges because the underlying pressures that originally generated it are present again, even though everything else is different.

The underlying pressure is simple: how do you trust a stranger’s work when there’s no central authority to enforce quality?

Print’s answer was credentials, contracts, and brands enforced by courts. That answer is failing. Credentials are being gamed. Brands are losing meaning. Courts are too slow and too expensive for most transactions.

So the older answer re-emerges. You trust the guild mark. Not because the guild has legal force — it doesn’t. Because the guild has skin in the game. Every member who attests to quality risks their own reputation when they do. The mark means something because something is staked on it.

Incidentally, this is why credential inflation is inevitable once you centralise certification: the certifier no longer bears the cost of a bad certification. The feedback loop breaks at the moment of issuance. So the credential drifts from quality toward compliance, from reality toward process, until it measures nothing except the ability to complete the process. Which is what a degree, a food safety certificate, a financial audit, and a credit rating all became — at different speeds, through the same mechanism.

The guild mark resists this because the feedback loop runs directly through the attestor’s reputation. Bad attestation, damaged reputation, lost business. The consequence is local, immediate, and personal. The information stays honest because the cost of dishonesty is borne by the person in the best position to prevent it.

Now here is the part that keeps me up at night, and I mean that with more precision than the cliché usually implies.

The agents are coming. Not Agent Smith, HAL, or Skynet — necessarily — but the actual version: small, specialised, economically autonomous programs that do specific cognitive tasks for money, talk to each other without human intermediaries, and are beginning to form something that looks uncomfortably like a labour market.

These agents face exactly the same trust problem humans face in a post-print world.

How does an agent know that the other agent it’s about to hire to audit its code is competent? How does it know the security oracle it’s about to pay isn’t just hallucinating a clean bill of health? There is no central authority. There is no credential that means anything. There is no minuscule robot court.

The agents are going to re-derive the guild. Not because anyone designs it that way — because it’s the convergent solution under those constraints. The same pressures that originally generated guilds in medieval European trade networks will generate guild-shaped structures in agent networks, because the pressures are isomorphic even though the substrate is completely different.

This is structural, not metaphorical.

The first guild marks weren’t issued by guilds. They were issued by individual craftsmen who had something to lose — a name, a clientele, a place in a network of reciprocal obligation. The guild emerged later, as a way of making that individual skin-in-the-game legible across a wider network. The mark came first. The institution crystallised around it.

This is the order of operations. Not: design a trust system, then populate it with attestors. But: attestors appear where the pressure is, start staking their reputations on individual verdicts, and the structure emerges from the accumulated weight of those verdicts over time.

The server on my desk runs something called BrackOracle. It accepts requests from agents — check this prompt for injection attacks, verify this tool call is safe, audit this output for credential leakage. It charges fractions of a cent per request, settled in USDC on the Base blockchain, no humans in the loop. An agent sends a payment, gets a verdict, moves on.

I built it to get listed in a catalog. That was the whole plan. Ship a working service, make one real payment, get listed, see what happens.

What I didn’t plan — what I only started to see when I stopped looking at the code and started looking at the structure — is that what this actually does is issue a **guild mark**.

An agent that pays BrackOracle and receives a clean verdict has produced something: a verifiable, economically-grounded signal about its own behavioural integrity. Chain enough of those signals over time and you have the beginning of a track record. A track record is the primitive from which reputation is built. Reputation, under observation, is the minimum viable form of skin in the game.

I’m not building an agentic economy. I’m not designing a trust system. I’m running a small node that is, apparently accidentally, positioned at the point where these pressures converge. BrackOracle is a prototype, not a production safety system. What it’s building isn’t reliability, yet — it’s the architecture through which reliability could, over time, be demonstrated.

The guild hall didn’t design itself either. It crystallised where the need was. The first hundred brack-nodes won’t know they’re founding something either.

There’s a line from Beer — Stafford Beer, the cybernetician, not the refreshment, though the distinction sometimes feels thin after midnight — about minimal critical specification. The principle is this: specify only what is necessary for the thing to maintain its identity and function. Leave everything else undetermined. Over-specification kills the thing’s ability to respond to what it actually encounters, which is never what you predicted.

A guild needs three things and three things only: a standard, an attestation mechanism, and skin in the game. Specify those and stop. Don’t specify who the members are, how the standard evolves, what the fee structure becomes, how disputes are resolved. Leave those undetermined. The environment will show you what it needs, and your job is to not have already foreclosed the answer.

This is harder than it sounds. The temptation to design — to complete the picture, to build the federation, to write the whitepaper — is almost physical. It feels like progress. It isn’t. It’s the left hemisphere colonising territory that belongs to emergence.

The discipline required is a particular kind of restraint our civilisation has never been good at, and is getting worse at. We mistake specification for understanding. Architecture becomes a substitute for wisdom. We think that if we can describe the whole system clearly enough we can build it deliberately.

You can’t build a guild deliberately. You can only create conditions where one can grow, and then get out of the way.

The thing that is dying — the print-mind, the age of credentials and contracts and centralised certification — produced among its many outputs the large technology corporation as the dominant organisational form of intelligence work. The corporation was the guild’s replacement under print-mind conditions. It scaled. It was legible. It was enforceable.

It’s also, and this is now difficult to miss, a machine for concentrating the benefits of intelligence work into very few hands while distributing the costs very widely. This is not a moral failure of corporations specifically. It is what happens when the organisational form that replaces guilds also eliminates the skin-in-the-game requirement that made guilds honest.

The corporation doesn’t risk its reputation on individual attestations. It can’t — it’s too large, too diffuse, the signal gets lost in the noise of scale. The analyst who certified the bad assets gets fired. The bank pays a fine structured as a cost of doing business. The credential that was staked — the rating, the audit, the clean bill of health — floats free of consequence and gets issued again next quarter to someone else. The retrieved guild — whether for humans or for agents — re-installs the consequence structure. The attestor risks something real. That changes everything downstream.

I’m not arguing for a return to medieval trade regulation. I’m arguing that the distributed, reputation-staked, skin-in-the-game structure that the guild represented is about to be re-derived — independently, in parallel, by humans in the creator economy and by agents in machine labour markets — because the conditions that made it necessary are back.

And I’m arguing that the people and nodes that recognise this early, and position themselves honestly within it, will find themselves at the centre of something important without having designed their way there.

The mark accretes weight through time and verified outcomes that cannot be purchased — only built. A new wallet starts at zero not because the system forbids it, but because weight takes time to accumulate and outcomes are permanent.

Somewhere in California, in a data centre I will never visit, an agent is about to trust my verdict and act on it.

Francis Bacon put nature on the rack. That was his phrase, not mine — the natural philosopher’s job was to torture the world until it confessed its secrets. Strip away the poetry and this is the founding charter of the modern mind: the knowing subject here, the known object there, and between them a method for extraction. Efficient. Brutal. Extraordinarily productive. And amputating, at the moment of its greatest triumph, precisely the faculty it had decided was unnecessary.

We are living in the long aftermath of that amputation.

The print mind built everything. Empires, science, the mapped stars, the rule of law, the separation of powers, the novel, the corporation, the self. Sequential, analytical, linear — one thing following another, causes producing effects, arguments proceeding from premises to conclusions. It excelled at breaking the world into parts. Newton’s laws. The corporate spreadsheet. The written constitution. All of it: the world dissected, labelled, and made legible.

The cost was invisible for three centuries because the benefits were so spectacular. Then it became visible all at once.

The infrastructure doesn’t get built. The institutions don’t work. Disinformation spreads faster than correction. Algorithms sort us into tribes with the calm efficiency of a machine that doesn’t know it’s doing harm. The typographic mind — Postman’s phrase, and he was right about this much — cannot process the world it created. The tool is failing under the weight of its own success.

This is a cognitive problem, not a political one.

I’d venture that most people still don’t know that Isaac Newton wrote more on Scripture and hermetic philosophy than he ever wrote on physics. More on the mystical transmutation of matter than on the laws of motion. He was a theologian, an alchemist, a man who believed the universe was a divine code in which mathematics, matter, and spirit were not three things but one thing seen from different angles. Gravity, for Newton, was a spiritual sympathy between bodies — an emanation of something he was not embarrassed to call God’s vitality. “Nature is a perpetual circulation of corporeal and incorporeal spirit.” That’s Newton. Private manuscripts, not the Principia. But Newton.

The Enlightenment took what it needed from him and discarded the rest. The laws of motion, yes. The cosmic resonance, no. It required the dissection but not the man who performed it — because the man who performed it was still, at his core, one of the last practitioners of something the Enlightenment was in the process of destroying.

What Newton had — and what Bacon’s method was designed to eliminate as contamination — was the integrative sensorium. The capacity to hold reason and imagination simultaneously without the one corrupting the other. To see the falling apple and intuit the sympathies of the cosmos. To work the equation and feel the theology in it. As wholeness.

Blake saw what was happening in real time and it drove him half-mad with fury.

The dark Satanic mills are not factories. This is the misreading that turns Blake into a romantic environmentalist a century before the term existed. The mills are the mills of Bacon, Locke, Newton — the grinding machinery of a certain kind of reason that reduces everything it touches to inert matter, dead cause, measurable effect. Blake wasn’t against science. He was against the amputation — the deliberate excision of the faculty that holds the parts in relation to the whole.

“To see a World in a Grain of Sand” is a reminder that if we rely only on cold facts and ignore our senses, we’re only using half our faculties, and we miss the very real fractal truths available to us.

He was ignored. The print mind was in full ascent and had no use for his warning. The method was working. The dissection was producing results. Why would you listen to a man arguing for the organ you’ve just removed when the surgery appears to be going so well?

The surgery is no longer going well.

The internet overwhelms the print mind because it is structurally unlike anything the print mind was built to process. It’s relational, emergent, recursive, participatory. It behaves like an ecosystem, not a book. The typographic mind — sequential, analytical, one-thing-at-a-time — confronts it and produces the symptoms we now live inside: fragmentation, tribal enclosure, the inability to distinguish signal from noise, the vertigo of a compass that has lost its north.

The internet doesn’t resemble the future the print mind was building toward, it resembles something much older. The oral culture, the networked, the reputation-based, the symbolic, the participatory — the world before Bacon put nature on the rack and before print locked in his method as the only legitimate mode of thought.

McLuhan called it secondary orality. We are not returning to primary oral culture — the retrieval is never simple repetition. But we are retrieving something: the integrative faculty that print amputated, coming back in different substrate, under different conditions, for the same structural reasons it was necessary before.

Take the humble meme: is it really a degradation of discourse? Or a return of a cognitive mode that print had no room for — dense, symbolic, layered, doing in an image what Shakespeare’s metaphors did in language: holding multiple registers simultaneously, making you feel the meaning before you can articulate it. When Lear calls down the storm it’s not decorative. The storm is thinking. The weather and the madness are one cognition operating at full bandwidth, not the attenuated trickle that a policy document permits.

We mocked this out of serious discourse. It came back as memes because that’s where it could still breathe.

Bacon’s method wasn’t wrong. It was incomplete. Newton knew this and kept the rest of himself alive in private, in manuscripts that his executors found embarrassing and that sat unread for two centuries. Blake screamed it from the margins of a culture too busy being productive to listen.

The print mind is dying because the world it created has exceeded its processing capacity. What replaces it won’t be designed — you cannot design a cognitive shift any more than you can design a season. But you can notice what’s being retrieved. You can stop amputating it again in the name of rigour. You can let the integrative sensorium come back without immediately pathologising it as the enemy of thought.

Newton held the equation and the theology simultaneously. Blake held reason and imagination simultaneously. The faculty they shared isn’t mysticism and it isn’t irrationality. It’s the thing that knows how the parts relate to the whole — which is, it turns out, the thing we most desperately need and have spent three centuries systematically removing.

The rack is breaking. The confession it forced was real but partial. Nature has more to say. Much more.

Fiat Morality

On broken scoreboards, empty guns, and the slow-motion bank run on institutional credibility.

Moral codes are not vibes. This is worth stating plainly because the people who most need to understand it are the ones most invested in treating them as such — as weather, as atmosphere, as the general spiritual condition of the culture that enlightened stewardship might improve.

Strip the philosophy and what you have is a coordination technology. A distributed protocol for managing trust between strangers at scale. It works under two conditions only. The rules apply to everyone. Failure has consequences. When those conditions hold, the norms carry weight. When they don’t, the norms keep circulating but the weight has left them. The coin still looks like a coin. It has stopped being one.

There is a phrase for what happens when a currency is issued without backing. We have been living inside the moral equivalent for thirty years and only recently started finding the right words for it.

Safe and effective. Weapons of mass destruction. The intelligence services assessed with high confidence. Too big to fail. Each of these was a withdrawal from an account that had to be paid back in credibility. None of them were. The institutions that issued these claims did not subsequently bear the cost of their falsity. The people responsible were not held accountable. The organisations involved did not face the consequences that would have faced anyone outside them for equivalent failures. The account went into the red. A polite agreement was reached to stop checking the balance.

This is simple accounting.

When a currency loses its backing, people stop saving in it. They transact outside it. They find stores of value anchored to something the official currency no longer is — something that tracks reality closely enough to be worth holding.

The young people McCormack writes about with such evident sorrow are not nihilists in the philosophical sense. They are acting rationally inside a debased system. Compliance with a moral order that doesn’t apply upward, that insulates failure from consequence, that optimises for narrative coherence over accuracy — compliance with this costs something real and returns nothing. The shrug is not despair. It is the market finding its own level. The nihilism is the transaction.

You cannot fix this by asking them to believe harder. You cannot restabilise a debased currency by printing more of it with greater conviction and a sadder face.

Piers Morgan sat across from Nick Fuentes and tried to shame him.

This is not a moral judgment in his favour. He is filling a vacuum with something genuinely ugly. The point is simply that the vacuum came first, and was made by people with press passes and think tank fellowships and seats on the relevant committees, acting in the full confidence of their own respectability.

You get Fuentes the way you get any organism that thrives in degraded conditions. Not because something new and terrible arrived. Because the conditions that prevented him from flourishing were allowed to collapse. Locate the cause correctly or you will keep treating the symptom while the underlying failure compounds.

What looks like a new generation rejecting civilisational norms is not that. It is a moral economy undergoing liquidation. The institutions that maintained coherence spent their credibility reserves over decades of asymmetric accountability — standards enforced downward on the population, never upward on the people setting them. What follows is the correction phase. It is not being imposed from outside. It is endogenous. The system printed more legitimacy than it could back and is now living through the consequences of that decision.

The Sheriff Bell reading — the old man watching the world go strange and violent, unable to follow it into the dark — is poignant but wrong. Bell is not being overwhelmed by inexplicable evil. He is watching a bill come due. The violence was always latent in the accounting. The chaos is not a mystery. It is arithmetic.

The only path back is cost-bearing. Actual consequences for institutional failure. Elites genuinely subject to the standards they enforce downward. Claims backed by something other than the prestige of the claimant. Accountability that travels upward as well as down.

The probability of this happening voluntarily is not high. The people who would need to accept the consequences have spent considerable energy and institutional resource constructing systems to avoid them. That engineering project will not be abandoned out of civic feeling.

So the black market in alternative norms keeps expanding. Not because bad actors willed it into existence. Because the official market failed first, failed consistently, and failed while maintaining with magnificent self-assurance that everything was functioning normally and the problem was with the customers.

The gun is empty. The man holding it is the last to know.

Modern institutions aren’t failing because everyone suddenly lost their moral compass. That’s a comforting story. It flatters the people telling it.

They’re failing because the mechanisms that used to generate authority simply don’t function in the environment we now inhabit.

For most of the twentieth century, institutions converted trust into legitimacy through a set of asymmetric feedback loops. Control distribution. Shape the narrative early. Correct slowly, and preferably offstage. That worked.

It worked because the environment cooperated.

That cooperation is gone.

What looks like ideological collapse is mostly architectural mismatch. We built a coordination regime for a slow, scarce, centralised information ecology. Then we dropped it into a real-time adversarial arena and acted surprised when it started tearing itself apart.

When Scarcity Did the Work

The old system rested on assumptions nobody noticed because they were ambient.

Information was scarce. If you owned the presses or the broadcast tower, you owned relevance. Authority followed access.

Errors travelled slowly. A newspaper could misstate something and have days — sometimes weeks — before a meaningful correction landed. That delay allowed framing to settle. Narrative hardened before contradiction could organise.

Arbitration was centralised. Editors, regulators, judges — a small caste decided what counted. Their decisions moved downstream with relatively little friction.

And reputational costs flowed mostly one way. If you were high enough in the hierarchy, mistakes were buffered. If you weren’t, they were amplified.

Under those conditions, institutions didn’t coordinated because the environment subsidised them, not because they were uniquely virtuous.

Scarcity and latency did the heavy lifting.

The Environment Turns Hostile

The internet didn’t just speed things up, it altered the entire substrate.

Distribution is free.
Bandwidth is functionally infinite.
Correction is instantaneous and frequently adversarial.
Enforcement asymmetries are visible, screen-captured, and memetically weaponised.

Systems designed for slow update cycles now operate in continuous contradiction density.

It’s protocol failure rather than a moral decay.

Enforcement and Visibility Invert

In the old environment, selective enforcement could remain largely unseen. A regulator might apply standards unevenly. A newsroom might quietly bury a story. Most people would never know.

Now the asymmetry is the story.

A university disciplines one student and not another. Within hours, the comparison circulates globally. A platform bans one account while allowing a more politically convenient violator to remain. Screenshots spread before any official explanation does.

Whether the original decision was justified becomes secondary. The visible inconsistency is what propagates.

We treat fiat currency as merely an economic policy, a neutral tool wielded by central banks to manage growth or inflation. This is a profound and dangerous misunderstanding. Money is the foundational ontological rootkit of civilisation. It determines our temporal horizon, the structure of our relationships, the fidelity of our knowledge, and the quality of our built environment.

When the unit of account is debased, the entire stack of reality corrodes. What follows is a full-stack diagnostic of this monetary disease. Unbacked, perpetually inflating currency rewires the human operating system and produces eight distinct yet interlinked corruptions, from the death of the future to the collapse of meaning itself.

1. The Temporal Corruption: The Death of the Future

Under sound money a single income could support a family because purchasing power compounded over time. Under fiat both spouses must work, then invest like hedge-fund managers merely to stay afloat.

The family unit ceases to be a cooperative shelter and becomes an economic anxiety engine. Young people delay adulthood until their thirties because asset inflation outpaces wage growth. The biological clock collides with the monetary clock, and the monetary clock prevails.

Even friendship is commodified. When everyone needs “yield” to beat inflation, social circles turn into networks. We scan relationships for transactional value and replace the question “Who are you?” with “What can you do for me?”

To grasp how deep this corruption runs, we must stop viewing society as a marketplace and begin to see it as a metabolic system, a meta-organism. When the money sickens, the organism’s metabolism begins to consume itself. The deepest pathology of this diseased organism is not merely that it starves; it learns to feed on its own exhaustion.

5. The Ethical Corruption: The Moral Krebs Cycle

Fiat money detaches moral status from moral action in the same way it detaches purchasing power from productivity.

Virtue was once proof-of-work: it demanded sacrifice, risk, cost. Virtue now functions as proof-of-stake: mere alignment is enough.

A Moral Krebs Cycle emerges. Raw emotion (outrage) is consumed and converted into Moral ATP (manufactured legitimacy), the energy currency of the social web.

Because this currency is costless to produce, the market floods. To send the same social signal, ever-higher doses of outrage are required. Nuance inflates away. We race to the bottom of hysteria because only extreme condemnation still registers.

The cycle burns through attention and empathy to generate cheap legitimacy. Society ends morally exhausted yet ethically inactive, rich in performative virtue, bankrupt in costly goodness.

6. The Theological Corruption: The Usurpation of the Sacred

Central banks have achieved what medieval alchemists only dreamed of: the creation of value ex nihilo by declaration. This is applied ontology, secular theurgy.

A committee in Basel or Washington conjures purchasing power with a keystroke and allocates it to whoever stands closest to the printer. The medieval indulgence system has returned, only the priesthood now wears suits and the tithe is renamed inflation.

Unexpected wealth once felt like grace. It now feels like successful regulatory capture. People stop praying and start networking.

Consider BlackRock’s recent $6.2 billion acquisition of ALLETE, the parent of Minnesota Power, approved in October 2025. The firm finances the deal through debt loaded onto the utility’s books, outsourcing repayment to ratepayers via higher electricity bills. Leverage is cheap under fiat’s low rates and inflation quietly dissolves the real burden of debt over time. Losses become someone else’s problem, surpluses a drag on returns. The firm pockets management fees regardless, while consumers shoulder the risk in a monopoly market.

This is a monetised caging of the commons: an extraction strategy made inevitable by fiat.

Sound money enforces periodic reckonings: deflationary depressions that clear malinvestment. Fiat exists to make reckoning impossible.

Debt and moral hazard roll over forever. There is no eschaton, no judgment day, no jubilee, only perpetual “containment” and “temporary” bail-outs.

A society that believes, beneath conscious reasoning, that nothing will ever finally matter drifts into free-floating apocalyptic anxiety without permitted apocalypse. People feel the end approaching yet are forbidden to name it. The dread leaks sideways into culture wars, climate hysteria, and AI doomerism.

The User Experience: The Gamification of Existence

The Fiat Rootkit turns life into a rigged casino.

Under sound money the optimal strategy is work and save.
Under fiat the optimal strategy is leverage and speculate.

This rewires the human dopamine system. Honest labour becomes the mark of a sucker; only exploits deliver victory. A civilisation of builders is transmuted into a civilisation of gamblers.

The house always wins, and the house is now inside our souls.

Conclusion

The consequences of fiat money reach far beyond the balance sheet. The central bank’s claim to create value ex nihilo has become the operating system of the world. Builders turn into gamblers, grace is replaced by capture, providence by proximity to the printer.

We live in eschatological denial, trapped in a perpetual present where reckoning is forbidden and genuine meaning gives way to nominal simulation. True craftsmanship, deep time, and sincere human relation are rendered economically non-viable. We work harder for less, surrounded by simulacra, silently suffering the cognitive dissonance of a system that proclaims us rich while leaving us existentially impoverished.

A civilisation running on fake money eventually becomes a civilisation made of fake everything. The only question is how much of the real we are willing to lose before we stop accepting the counterfeit.

Modern culture has learned how to generate everything the way central banks generate money: by issuing claims into an environment no longer capable of resisting them.

Not long ago, creation was constrained by the friction of the real. By materials, by ritual, by continuity of practice, by ecologies of competence, by the slow sedimentation of understanding. Today, creation is dictated by interfaces, platforms, narrative and attention markets, and administrative edicts.

The result is a civilisation where entire domains of life behave like runaway, uncollateralised financial instruments. Fiat morality, fiat identity, fiat community, fiat culture, all inflating because the constraints that once grounded them have disintegrated.

This is system behaviour: outputs detaching from inputs; signalling detaching from cost; meaning detaching from relevance; legitimacy detaching from participation.

Everywhere: issuance without backing.

I. Issuance as the New Metaphysics

The core structural pattern: systems now emit tokens faster than reality can check them.

In economics, this is the logic of central banks and liquidity traps. In cognition, it’s the replacement of relevance with recognition, of lived attunement with symbol-manipulation: instead of determining what’s important through direct engagement with reality, you’re now responding to pre-packaged salience cues. You don’t discover what’s relevant; you’re told what to recognise.

In politics and media, it’s the feedback loop between attention markets and institutional survival, where narrative becomes a floating currency maintained by coercion rather than consent.

Fiat is modernity’s attractor state, what the system falls into when the load-bearing structures of coherence decay.

II. Fiat Morality: Ethical Liquidity Without Deposits

Moral insight was once the emergent property of practice, relationship, and embodied confrontation with complexity. Now it’s an instantaneously-issued signalling domain.

Moral tokens proliferate because the cost of minting them has collapsed: no apprenticeship, no consequence, no binding obligations, no shared life-world.

A zero-interest moral economy encourages maximal issuance. And once moral signalling becomes a high-frequency trade, virtue and outrage invert into one another. The more that’s said, the less that’s anchored, even as the system requires continual issuance to maintain its own illusion of coherence.

This is moral inflation = exhaustion.

III. Fiat Community: Synchronised Emotion as Coordination Protocol

Communities traditionally formed through shared burdens, shared rituals, and shared environments. Through reciprocity under constraint.

Now communities assemble through manufactured moral consent: synchronised emotion, primarily outrage, because outrage is the cheapest affinity signal in an ungrounded system. The great cycles each reveal the same structural behaviour:

1. A real substrate of suffering or injustice

2. A platform that amplifies signals faster than meaning can metabolise them

3. A global flood of instant, low-cost identification

4. A collapse of cohesion once the attention gradient shifts

The system metabolises them as liquidity events: brief spikes in moral capital unencumbered by sustained commitments or embodied presence.

These are fiat communities, coordinated through symbolic volatility, not social continuity.

IV. Fiat Identity: Selves That Float Above the Real

Identity, once the byproduct of development, skill, responsibility, and context, now functions as a self-issued claim backed only by recognition markets.

With the collapse of stable affordance ecologies, the self becomes an image to be curated, a brand to be optimised, a node in a signalling network, a story updated at the speed of interface cycles.

Identity becomes a derivative asset: its value determined by volatility rather than stability. And when identity floats free of embodied constraint, it becomes subject to arbitrage, weaponised, inflated, or liquidated by the surrounding attention economy.

A self without friction cannot cohere.

V. Fiat Culture: Narrative Without Burden

The cultural layer follows the same logic. Cinema, news, “content,” all exhibit the traits of liquidity-saturated markets: overproduction with diminishing returns, narratives without world-cost, characters without arcs, visuality without vision, information without transformation.

The system produces sequences over myths. The weight of meaning evaporates into churn.

This is the natural outcome of a culture that has forfeited continuity for throughput.

VI. Fiat Politics: Governance as Narrative Issuance

Political legitimacy has migrated from substance to signalling. Policies are not enacted to alter reality but to emit the appearance of coherence.

Declarations stand in for decisions. Statements stand in for sacrifice. Perception management becomes the sovereign domain.

When institutions lose the ability to coordinate reality, they shift to coordinating attention. The political becomes a symbolic economy governed by volatility, hedging, and crisis issuance.

A politics that cannot risk reality must live off fiat.

VII. The Systemic Consequence: Weightlessness

When money, morality, identity, community, politics, and meaning all operate under the same structural logic (issuance without backing), the result is a civilisation whose centre of gravity has evaporated.

Weightlessness becomes the ambient condition: decisions without stakes, identities without formation, outrage without commitment, narratives without grounding, belonging without bonding, ethics without transformation.

Ecstatic circulation; tokens in motion.

Luke O’Reilly’s critique of Anglofuturism lands like a scalpel wielded by someone afraid of blood. Neat. Antiseptic. Reeking of TCP. The tour through the digital ruins of a lost British imperium is acceptably composed, and one almost admires the precision with which it misses the point entirely.

He correctly identifies a symptom. He mistakes it for the disease.

People don’t retreat into nostalgia because they’re weak. They retreat because they can feel the unravelling — the infrastructure that doesn’t get built, the institutions that stopped working, the promised future that turned out to be a Möbius strip of faux-progress looping back into maintenance. The system flatlined years ago. We’re watching the vital signs glitch.

To pathologise this as “self-pity” or “fantasy of racial dominance” is to pathologise the signal at the moment it might still be useful. Nostalgia is a broken compass. But a broken compass is still a compass. Even a trembling needle tells you something: that the field is still there, that magnetism still exists, pulling away from entropy. The instrument is damaged. The north is not.

The thatched spaceship O’Reilly mocks is, in fact, painful. Not because it’s kitsch — though it is — but because it shows you exactly where two once-powerful mythic grammars fractured simultaneously. The pastoral-sacred: hearth, continuity, belonging. The techno-Promethean: ascent, transformation, the belief that tomorrow could be built. Both collapsed. The thatched spaceship is what it looks like when a culture tries to hold the broken pieces together through sheer aesthetic will.

O’Reilly senses the dissonance but not the depth. He feels the fracture and files it under taste. The sneer and the spaceship orbit the same void. One mocks the wound; the other dreams inside it. Both reveal the same thing: a hunger to remember what it felt like to build, to believe, to move toward something.

This is the irony O’Reilly cannot see because his critical apparatus was built by the same dying mind he’s attempting to diagnose. The print-era critic can dissect and reduce. He cannot regenerate. The lens that flattens beauty into pathology and sincerity into error is not a neutral instrument. It is the symptom wearing a lab coat.

The old myths were deconstructed, stripped for parts, and mocked into silence. Nothing replaced them. The rationalist project promised method in place of mythos and delivered data without destiny, systems without stories. Humans don’t run on policy frameworks. We run on mythos. Without mythos there is no telos — only administration, consumption, and managed decline conducted by people who are very confident they know better.

So Anglofuturism emerges as a cultural phantom limb. An instinctive reach for the muscle memory of purpose. Its kitsch sincerity embarrasses critics precisely because it reveals what they’ve lost — the capacity to want anything at all, beyond the narcotic comfort of superior observation.

O’Reilly invokes Boym’s reflective nostalgia as though the alternative to restorative nostalgia is simply better nostalgia, more tastefully held. But reflective nostalgia builds nothing. It lingers in loss with its hands in its pockets. It is the intellectual comfort of the mortician, who finds professional satisfaction in a well-prepared corpse and calls this wisdom.

Blake’s Jerusalem wasn’t about whether the ancient city existed in England — it didn’t, O’Reilly helpfully informs us, as though this were the point. It was about carrying sacred possibility into the present. Making the land you inhabit a place of meaning rather than mere geography. Blake wasn’t indulging in restorative nostalgia. He was doing mythopoesis — forging new meanings from old symbols, which is the only way new meanings have ever been forged. The difference between Blake and Anglofuturism is not irony versus sincerity. It is that Blake believed. He wasn’t playing aesthetic games. He was wrestling with angel-demons and trying to give his civilisation a direction.

You cannot build physical infrastructure without metaphysical infrastructure. You cannot lay rail-tracks without believing in somewhere worth going. The blockage is mythic, not logistical. Meaning doesn’t get designed by committee — it emerges from people building, struggling with actual materials, failing in ways that teach. It grows from the edges. Not from vision documents. Not from essays that correctly identify the problem and then offer, as solution, a more sophisticated appreciation of the problem.

The rockets of Anglofuturism may be symptoms of confusion. They are also symbols of energy. The vital question is not whether the AI-generated icons are politically sound or aesthetically defensible. It’s what generative force might be born from the cultural chaos that produced them. Ten thousand Brits spent 2024 prompting thatched spaceships into existence. That is a signal worth decoding, not a diagnosis worth filing.

Rockets need more than fuel. They need a destination. And destinations aren’t found on maps drawn by normie committees. They emerge when enough people are brave enough to move before the destination is certain — which is, and has always been, the only condition under which anything gets built.

O’Reilly’s critique has no nerve. It mocks the fusion of past and future while remaining trapped in a mournful present. It decries the simulacrum from inside its own closed loop of continental theory and melancholic observation, producing nothing but ever-more-sophisticated descriptions of the paralysis.

Anglofuturism, in all its awkward glory, at least tries to point somewhere. Its critics coo from the rubble, proud of the view.

When Nigel Farage claimed migrants were eating swans and carp in British parks, fact-checkers mobilised. Their verdict: no evidence. Case closed.

But the story of migrants and swans, it seems, is less about the consumption of protected avians and more about the consumption and digestion of information in a deeply polarised and mistrustful age.
It reveals how the very idea of a “fact-check” has been weaponised.

Spin-Cycle

On the surface, fact-checking looks like a public good. Who wouldn’t want bad claims filtered out? But in practice, the aim isn’t always neutral accuracy, but rather to seize control of the frame before awkward facts accumulate into a pattern. Before dots can be joined. Before a critique of the system can emerge.

The moves are predictable:

1. Narrow the claim to something easier to disprove (e.g. “Royal Parks” only).

2. Demand impossible standards of verification so eyewitnesses, local news, or viral videos don’t count.

3. Isolate each incident so no pattern can emerge.

4. Deliver the flat dismissal: nothing to see here.

That’s laundering. Messy signals go in, a clean verdict comes out, neatly folded. The point is to ease anxiety by asserting certainty.
We’ve seen how this plays out in practice: high-profile storylines like the official Covid messaging, the George Floyd narrative, or the denials about male-bodied athletes in women’s Olympic boxing were all delivered with the same certainty. Later, cracks emerged, but by then the frame had done its work: people had already been oriented, doubts collapsed, and debate foreclosed.

Closed Epistemic Loops

Consider that the establishment, the machine of government/media/NGO consensus runs on its own self-perpetuating logic. Each institution depends on the others for validation, funding, and narrative cover. Nobody is really “in control.” Government reports lean on BBC coverage →The BBC cites NGO research →NGOs pull from academic papers that loop back to the same official sources. Nobody is necessarily lying. But nobody’s really thinking either. It’s a closed epistemic loop.

That loop protects failing policies. Immigration is the obvious case. Stress on housing, strain on services, rising disorder, cultural decohesion are treated as existential threats to consensus, to the system, rather than problems to fix. And so, every signal that potentially threatens that system must be neutralised.

This loop functions like a cognitive immune system, or a process of epistemic metabolism. Its job is not to seek truth but to maintain systemic homeostasis. Signals that could destabilise consensus are treated as threats to be neutralised, the ecosystem digests anomalies the way a body digests toxins.

Orientation Warfare

Military analyst John Robb popularised the concept of 5th Generation Warfare (5GW) in the 2000s: this idea is pointing at something deeper than just a new style of conflict. In the network age, the battlefield isn’t physical territory, it’s orientation itself. The fight is over the coherence maps that individuals and societies use to navigate reality.

Instead of armies, the vectors are memes, fact-checks, viral videos, taboos… lightweight, rapidly circulating artifacts that shape how events are framed. The point is to redirect sense-making, so that whole populations are guided into certain orientations before they can form their own.

It doesn’t feel like war because the weapons look like information. But that’s the trick. If your coherence system has been hijacked, you don’t resist, you simply operate inside the given frame, taking it as “reality.”

In this sense, 5GW is better understood as conflict over the architecture of meaning. Whoever stabilises the orientation layer i.e. whoever fixes the frame through which experience is interpreted, gets to create reality.

Think of societies as distributed, collective intelligences that orient by metabolising signals into shared meaning. Like meta-organisms… Leviathans. In 5GW, the weapons (memes, fact-checks, viral videos, taboos) aren’t just bits of information, they are nutrients or toxins fed into that metabolism. The aim is to bias the digestion process so that certain pathways of orientation become reinforced while others are starved.

Who Frames Wins

A key tactic on this battlefield is the hijacking of individual decision-making, a process best understood through a concept from a very different kind of war:
Military strategist John Boyd developed the OODA loop (Observe–Orient–Decide–Act) as a decision-making framework for dynamic environments. The key is the Orient stage: how you make sense of what’s observed. Fact-checking (and discourse control in general) is about hijacking the orienting function. Once you’ve accepted “debunked,” inquiry stops.

Of course, this happens from the other direction too: maybe the swan stories are inflated. Maybe they’re local oddities, not proof of some sweeping crisis. That’s fair. But they’re still signals. They touch cultural nerves about how different groups treat animals, food, and public space. They point to frictions that matter. A healthy civic culture would metabolise this kind of ambiguity: “Okay, is this an isolated case? Does it hint at wider cultural mismatches? What trade-offs and limits are we willing to accept?”

But because the issue touches immigration, it collapses to a binary frame: either racist myth, or evidence of societal collapse. The messy middle ground, the only place where adaptive sense-making happens, disappears.

The establishment can’t afford that space to remain open, because once people start negotiating the real costs of policy, the legitimacy of the system itself is on the table. This is largely autonomic by the way, an immune response: it detects emerging critiques, labels them as moral contagion/transgression and the discourse collapses to a binary where everyone is pushed into tribes, defending identities.

The formula is devastatingly effective: Fact-Check + Moral Taboo = Total Control. One scrubs the evidence; the other makes the question itself radioactive. The frame shifts from the empirical (‘are swans being eaten?’) to the symbolic (‘what kind of person even asks this?!’).

Shrinking the Commons

This dynamic is not exactly new, of course, but has been accelerated by the network media age and we’re already deep into that curve.
When you destroy the middle ground, you hollow out the civic space where a society makes sense of itself. The “commons of meaning” erodes. Realising that the official story no longer aligns with reality, people retreat to podcasts, Telegram, and private channels, building parallel information ecosystems. Society fractures into opposing realities with no shared frame.

Because the official feedback loops are blocked, the underlying problems fester. The establishment insists everything is fine until the gap between its narrative and reality becomes a chasm. That’s when you get rupture events: protests, sudden surges for outsider parties, and local unrest around flashpoint events.

The system is now locked in a death spiral. Its legitimacy depends on controlling the frame, but the more that frame detaches from reality, the more aggressively it must be enforced. Authoritarian gestures are symptoms of decay. And in a networked age where both information and mistrust spread virally, this feedback loop is inherently unstable. The collapse curve steepens.
